If I had to describe my calling in life I would say that I'm here to SERVE people in need and to improve their lives.

I love to see when people are capable of incorporating justice, tolerance, service and fraternity into their lives.  I really care about the needs and dreams of the people who are mistreated just because they are different or because they don't fit among the powerful in society.  For instance, people of color, women, homosexuals, immigrants, and poor people in general. I really believe in social activism, because I have seen that once people unite and let their voice hear they can make a positive change in the world.  Although I have never been part of a big social activism crew, I really enjoy doing my own social activism individually.

Let me tell you a little story, I'm a Sociology major and I have recently taken a course that is called "Gender and Society" and I learned that gender is just a social invention that some people have used in order to oppress those who don't "belong" to the hegemonic ideal:  white, heterosexual, male.  Now that we have seen many women attending college and in some way making a difference to benefit those, who for a long time have been stopped from reaching the top, we have gained hope to believe that one day our society can be genderless; thus, a society free of injustice and inequality.

Since I took that course, I began to challenge those around me by asking questions about their lives, and I learned that people are very attached to society's expectations and they can't accept a genderless society even if that means equality for all.  Since I've learned that in order to achieve justice in this world we have to start by changing people's minds, I have to tell you that I'm willing to do as much as I can in order to do that.

My ideal job description would entail service, support, counseling, and an environment where people can find acceptance, friendship, and the hope to keep living even though they don't see any positivism in their lives.  Certainly I would devote my life to help and to brighten the days of those who don't have any hope for the future.  As I explained before, those who need the greatest amount of help are the people who suffer from intolerance, injustice, and humiliation.  Unfortunately and ironically those are the people who have no power to demand change and good treatment.  For that reason, I think that society needs people, who can provide strength and the necessary means that will encourage people to unite and ask the powerful to fulfill their necessities.

In my ideal job my days would be very busy because an 8hr shift would not be enough to solve the problems of those who desperately need to find solutions.  In addition, I would be very engaged in the training of future leaders, because I believe that in order to keep making positive changes in society we need people who have the courage and the devotion to make it happen and those are the real leaders that we need to develop.  Ironically, some of the greatest leaders that we had in the past and some that we have now are people who come from the groups who have always been oppressed by society; for that reason, I will devote my time to help the needy become real leaders in order to provide a promising future for our next generations.

1) What new experience(s) did you have in 2008?

I had 2 new experiences that were and still are awesome!

A) I got married in June!! My husband is a great person... he's the love of my life, the person who helps me become a better person each day! His name is David.. =)

B) I became the O.L.A. (organization of Latin American Students) Secretary, which is the Latino Organization in my school (a huge club!) and I had a great time in the first semester.  My position helped me improve my leadership skills! and it also allowed me to help others...

2) What inspired you in 2008?

Definitely my husband and my family, (Dad, mom and my beautiful sister Galilea).  Everything I do is intended to make the life of my loved ones happier and stronger every day!

3) What challenged you this year?

Being able to manage my time! I was super busy because I'm a new wife! and I'm the OLA secretary but I'm also a student so.... I had to pull my hair off and try to spend the same amount of time on each one of my responsibilities because I want to make sure that I do well on each one of them! =)

4) What new person or people entered your life?

The OLA members!! They are awesome people... we had a lot of fun during the OLA events, and I'm proud to say that thanks to them OLA is #1 around campus (out of like 50 other organizations!)

10 Things Men Can Do To End Men's Violence Against Women

Posted on Dec 30th, 2008 by Fanny : Tzedakah (Social Justice) Fanny

1. Acknowledge and understand how sexism, male dominance and male privilege lay the foundation for all forms of violence against women.

2. Examine and challenge our individual sexism and the role that we play in supporting men who are abusive.

3. Recognize and stop colluding with other men by getting out of our socially defined roles, and take a stance to end violence against women.

4. Remember that our silence is affirming. When we choose not to speak out against men's violence, we are supporting it.

5. Educate and re-educate our sons and other young men about our responsibility in ending men's violence against women.

6."Break out of the man box"- Challenge traditional images of manhood that stop us from actively taking a stand to end violence against women.

7. Accept and own our responsibility that violence against women will not end until men become part of the solution to end it. We must take an active role in creating a cultural and social shift that no longer tolerates violence against women.

8. Stop supporting the notion that men's violence against women is due to mental illness, lack of anger management skills, chemical dependency, stress, etc... Violence against women is rooted in the historic oppression of women and the outgrowth of the socialization of men.

9. Take responsibility for creating appropriate and effective ways to develop systems to educate and hold men accountable.

10. Create systems of accountability to women in your community. Violence against women will end only when we take direction from those who understand it most, women.
