What has your recent relationship to money been like?

Posted on Jan 13th, 2009 by Fanny : Tzedakah (Social Justice) Fanny
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for January 13, 2009:

Wow!! this is a good question!! LOL well... what can I say... my relationship to money has never been easy, I really don't like it but I understand that it's an essential piece of green paper or metal coins that help me maintain my place in society...

Right now money hasn't been very friendly to me... so I hope that this year we start getting along... money has to understand that we need each other even though I don't like that relationship...

Yeah... pretty depressing uh? 8-O

Support the DREAM Act!!!

Posted on Jan 12th, 2009 by Fanny : Tzedakah (Social Justice) Fanny
Now_what
Pass the DREAM Act - Support Higher Education for All Students

The problem:
Many American students graduate from college and high school each year, and face a roadblock to their dreams: they can't drive, can't work legally, can't further their education, and can't pay taxes to contribute to the economy just because they were brought to this country illegally by their parents or lost legal status along the way. It is a classic case of lost potential and broken dreams, and the permanent underclass of youth it creates is detrimental to our economy. Former Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch has said: "In short, although these children have built their lives here, they have no possibility of achieving and living the American dream. What a tremendous loss for them, and what a tremendous loss to our society."

The solution:
The federal DREAM Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act), is a bipartisan legislation that would permit these students conditional legal status and eventual citizenship granted that they meet ALL the following requirements:

--if they were brought to the United States before they turned 16, are below the age of 30,
--have lived here continuously for five years,
--graduated from a U.S.
high school or obtained a GED
--have good moral character with no criminal record and
--attend college or enlist in the military.

Why should you care?
There is no other pathway to citizenship for these students.  Besides the injustice of punishing children for the alleged transgressions of their parents, throwing away the talent we have invested in from K-12 and accruing losses in human and financial capital by deporting talented students is bad public policy. The Social Security Administration has recently stated that we need a net increase of 100,000 immigrants each year to ensure Social Security solvency.

Passing the DREAM Act would actually help solve the Social Security crisis by creating a larger taxable base of educated Americans that are already in the United States. It would also free some of the backlog that currently plagues the legal immigration system. Also, the DREAM Act in its latest form, does not grant in-state tuition to any student.

Endorsements: Since 2001, almost a 1000 organizations have officially endorsed the bill.  Barack Obama has stated that DREAM Act beneficiaries are "American children for all intents and purposes" and has called this a top priority.

Tell President-Elect Obama to pass the DREAM Act in 2009.

If you had to pick another religion to practice, what would it be

Posted on Jan 12th, 2009 by Fanny : Tzedakah (Social Justice) Fanny
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for January 12, 2009:

Life
I don't belong to any religion, but I do believe in God... I believe that I'm not alive just because I have to power to be... I think that there is someone who keeps me alive and who takes care of me every single second of my life... to me, religion means God but it does not mean all those books and rules/laws that humans have to follow in order to deserve being called God's child or in order to gain your entrance to heaven...

I believe that God loves me no matter what I do, no matter to what religion I do/or do not belong because to him we are all the same.. I strongly believe that to God there are no religions, there are no determined bibles/sacred words or saints; therefore, since I think that religions have always in some way or another (positive or negative) lead to division/or inequality among humans I prefer to stay without practicing any cultura/human-made religion and I would always live happy by asking, talking, and praying all I want directly to God... I want to make sure that at least with God there are no rules/laws to follow because that makes me feel controlled and I don't think that would be a manifestation of true love!

Do you believe there is value in suffering?

Posted on Jan 12th, 2009 by Fanny : Tzedakah (Social Justice) Fanny
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for January 11, 2009:

Oh sure, I strongly believe that there is something positive about suffering, because first- it teaches you how to value those things that  you tend to ignore, second- it gives you more strenght which helps you face future suffering with more positivism and maturity, and third- it shows you what it means to feel happy!

I think suffering is important because without having experienced suffering we cannot distinguish the difference between sadness and happiness, love and hate/resentment... suffering allows us to respect, value and cherish those moments that bring happiness and light to our lives...

I have learned that in order to be successful you have to work hard and that you have to be dedicated, passionate and in love with whatever you're doing... I have also learned that I have to think twice before I act/speak, and that I don't have to regret my past because everything that happens, especially suffering, happens for a reason.... a GOOD reason... =)

Friday Five - Just relax...

Posted on Jan 10th, 2009 by Fanny : Tzedakah (Social Justice) Fanny
1) What do you love to do in your free time?

I love to read... it always helps me feel better... have dinner with my husband... listen some music, go to the movies!! I also love to talk to my parents, I enjoy to spend some time with my little sister or my best friends, and I love to visit Gaia! =)

2) What music helps you relax?

Instrumental... it always works! but I think that any music in general as long as the lyrics and the music bring me good memories!

3) What movie did you enjoy recently?

GRAN TORINO... it's a great movie.. good actors, good story, made me laugh a lot!! =D and I think that although it talks about racism and stereotypes, which to some people might seem to be a negative topic, I think that such a movie helps the viewer realize how we have come to take racial stereotypes as if they are "natural" and how that can create problems... watch that movie.. it will help you learn more about TOLERANCE!

4) Who makes you laugh?

My loved ones... that's one of the reasons why I love them: they make me laugh! which means that if you ever make me laugh you will become one of them... <3

5) Where do you go/ do to recharge?

I go to my bed... LOL well... I love nature so I guess that parks are great (during the summer of course!)

Leaving my country and starting a new life in a new country where I had to learn how to live in a society where everything was different (language, culture, values, etc...)

I guess that having such a challenge in my life gave me the most strenght because I learned a lot about myself, about people and their actions and it also gave the opportunity to be come more tolerant when it comes to accepting people who have different values and ideas... I learned to love DIVERSITY!

In addition, being an immigrant taught me how to value my own culture, my country, and my life! =)

When do you take time to reflect on your day?

Posted on Jan 10th, 2009 by Fanny : Tzedakah (Social Justice) Fanny
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for January 09, 2009:

I think that I try to reflect on my day when my husband and I are eating dinner... we always talk about the day and we reflect on what went good or not so good... =P

Sometimes, before I go to bed again I try to think about the good times just so I feel better...

The last time I did it was yesterday and realized that I was not tired at all and that I really need to start school so that I won't go crazy trying to make myself useful! I mean I'm on vacation but I can't wait to go back to normal life and start feeling that I have something to do with my time!! =)

My marriage... I think that having a good communication and being honest and loyal to each other has helped me and my husband to keep a relationship that is not just healthy but also full of truth and love... although nothing can be perfect we have come to understand that having a happy marriage depends on the desicions we make...

Sometimes life is hard but I still love it, because everything that happens in my life whether good or bad allows me to learn and value the things that sometimes I tend to ignore..

Where do you find the sacred in your life?

I think that I should find the sacred everywhere because everything is sacred... BUT sometimes as human beings we, including myself of course, tend to forget about that single truth... everything is sacred but we take it for granted!

I hope one day we all learn to value everything we have because GOD created it all... =)
